Today, when the news talks about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they talk about counterinsurgency doctrine or COIN. This seems simple enough, there are insurgents and we want to counter them. But what actually is counterinsurgency doctrine? Is it the right strategy for the wars we are fighting and for our military? How is it being implemented by our troops? These are important considerations and if you want to stay informed, come out to the First Division Museum’s COIN lecture series.
Our Date with History program will devote three months to the theme of counterinsurgency, in April, May, and June.
On Wednesday the 8th of June, a Dr. Andrew A. Wiest will give a lecture focusing on historical context of counterinsurgency. Dr. Wiest has several publications to his credit including Vietnam’s Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN, Haig: The Evolution of a Commander and Atlas of World War II (Co-authored with David Jordan). In addition, he has appeared on several documentaries for the History Channel, Granada Television and Lucasfilms, and has served as a commentator on military events for national news outlets including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
1.5 Teacher CPDU credits available for this event. Click here for details.
In addition, we will be hosting the Grand Opening for our Summer Exhibit, Operation Enduring Freedom: The 1st Division in Afghanistan. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and guests will be welcome to view the new exhibit for the full hour before the lecture begins. Refreshments will also be served.
