Transformations and Deployments
The Big Red One returned to Fort Riley, Kansas, in 2006 after
a 10 year absence. On July 7, 2006, the 1st Infantry
Division cased its colors in Wurzburg, Germany. On August 1,
2006, the Fighting First assumed command and control of Fort
Riley. This event is one of many transformations that the
Division is undergoing to meet the new challenges facing the
US Army.

In January 2010 the Big Red One headquarters saw its first
deployment to Iraq since its 2003 deployment in support of
Operation Iraqi Freedom. Soldiers from the Headquarters and
Headquarters Battalion were formally sent off in December
2009 from Fort Riley, KS to Iraq. During its current
deployment, the Division will take command of multiple
brigade combat teams and partner with Iraqi Security Forces
to maintain peace, deter aggression and help Iraqis continue
to rebuild their country.
1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team
On Feb. 10, the “Devil” Brigade conducted its first live
tank firing since 2005. The brigade’s Soldiers are currently
preparing at the squad and company levels for more advanced
training ahead of a rotation to the National Training Center
at Fort Irwin, CA, later this year.

Having spent 2009 deployed to Northwest Baghdad providing
security for the Kadhamiyah, Mansour and Karkh Security
Disctricts, the soldiers of the 2nd HBCT are still adjusting
to their current scenery at Fort Riley. Since the “Dagger”
Brigade returned to Fort Riley during September and October
of 2009, the Brigade has spent the last few months
reintegrating its soldiers with their families and resetting
unit equipment for future training missions.

The “Duke” Brigade has completed its move to Fort Knox, Ky.,
from Fort Hood, Texas, where it is continuing to train and
build to complete strength.

The 4th IBCT officially deployed to Northern Iraq in
September 2009 for 12 months. The “Dragon” Brigade has been
tasked with advising and assisting the Iraqi security forces
by leading and helping them carry out missions themselves.
The 4th IBCT is schedule to return to Fort Riley in August
of 2010. See 4th IBCT Update in this issue for the details
of their deployment so far!

The Combat Aviation Brigade will case its colors during a
deployment ceremony on March 2nd at Marshall Army Airfield.
The CAB will deploy to Iraq to support the local
government’s ongoing efforts to improve internal security,
economic growth and infrastructure development.

Brigade has been focused on training in the field, tactical
operations, command post and communication exercises in
preparation for their deployment to Kuwait in early April
2010. Once there they will perform support missions for
various units during their one year deployment.
