Clift Andrus
Scope of Collection
General Clift Andrus’ collection primarily consists of overlays and maps of differing operations throughout the war in Europe, an article within the Field Artillery Journal, and various biographies which illustrate the importance of his presence within the 1st Infantry Division throughout the war. The overlays and maps are useful in part because they show troop movements during different operations, the visual planning that went in to each operation, and the segments of operations orders that were used to relay to staff and to the division the importance and fine details of each operation. Included within the overlay collection are primary accounts and advice for differing objectives and operations from various Generals, as well as an indication of how simple or complicated an overlay or explanation of an operation would be during World War II. General Andrus’ article within the Field Artillery Journal – published in 1947 – depicted the importance of artillery as a primary factor in supporting the infantry in World War II, the importance of “ricochet fire,” and the future of the Artillery Branch. The various biographies in the McCormick Research Center’s library help in understanding a relatively unknown, yet important General of the Second World War Included are: thorough accounts of the General’s life before, during, and after the army; personal accounts of him as a person and Army officer from esteemed colleagues.
