Amphibious Invasions in Europe

Allied planners saw Germany as the greatest immediate threat and adopted a strategy that called for defeating Germany first. Beginning in November 1942, Allied forces carried out a series of amphibious assaults against Axis forces in North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. These assaults helped open a second front against the Axis powers in Europe and paved the way for the largest amphibious assault in history, Operation Overlord, the 1944 invasion of Normandy.
