M-1910 Entrenching Tool

This entrenching tool was carried by Captain Russell S. Grady, 26th Infantry, 1st Division during the amphibious landing on Omaha Beach. The shovel bears the mark of direct hit from artillery shrapnel, visible on the shovel’s blade and canvas carrier. The impact absorbed by the shovel likely saved Captain Grady’s life and is a testament to the tremendous amount of enemy fire encountered by 1st Division soldiers.
