World War I

June 8, 1917: The First Expeditionary Division is organized in New York City.

June 14, 1917: First Expeditionary Division HQ and first contingents sail from Hoboken, New Jersey.

June 26, 1917: First Expeditionary Division troops land at St. Nazaire, France.

July 5, 1917: Division units move to training area at Gondrecourt, France.

July 6, 1917: The Division is renamed the First Division.

October 21, 1917: The 18th Infantry Regiment, First Division is the first American Expeditionary Force unit to plant its colors on the frontlines.

Oct. 23, 1917: Battery C, 6th Field Artillery, First Division fires first artillery round of the AEF in World War One.

November 3, 1917: A German raid on trenches held by the 16th Infantry Regiment, First Division, result in the first AEF troops killed in action on the Western Front.
