In Their Words

1st Lt. Daniel J. Birmingham

“A few nights ago the good news reached us that
hostilities had ceased and it was a great occasion. Bands played, thousands of people with flags paraded around, women wept and men embraced each other like children. Poor France after her 4 years of mourning just broke. We are not speculating on when we are starting for home. Ah, that will be the time. And when we arrive in New York that will be some day.”

Letter of November 13th, 1918 from
1st Lt. Daniel J. Birmingham, 28th Inf., Co. M
