Gas Attack At M.N.D.

Telephone wires, no matter how carefully laid, caused ground currents which could occasionally be picked up by enemy “listening-in” posts. Accordingly, all units were known by code letters and their commanding officers and staffs by the names of months. “June” (signal officer) “M.N.D.” (2nd Battalion 6th Field Artillery) had acquired miscellaneous pets left in a neighboring village by the French peasants in their flight. Gas was used constantly on these positions and the “gas discipline” was very efficient.
