Signal Lamp and Accessories

Field signaling devices such as this electric lamp were used on the front to relay messages between units. By emitting a bright light which could be controlled by the signalman, this device was used to send flashing signals similar to Morse code. Due to the brightness of the lamp, such codes could be easily seen and were an effective means of communication during day or night. The long distance at which the light produced by the lamp was viewable also aided soldiers separated on the battlefield.

Once charged, the batteries were inserted into leather carrying pouches and connected by wires to a series of terminals located inside the pouches. The pouches were carried by means of a leather belt and shoulder harness. When not in use, the entire assembly could be broken down and stored inside a large wooden box.
